so we know that as adults we're using about 20% of all our energy at rest goes right to our brain that's a huge demand now imagine think about think about proportionally what a baby looks like and what their head looks like is like a third of their body or something right so how much how much how much energy does that need and then we're actually physically using some of those ketones ketones are are the bypass for the blood-brain barrier there's a little bit of fat that can get through especially the long-chain fatty acids that are important for a brain but most fat isn't getting through the blood-brain barrier so I think of ketones as the transport form get the fat past the blood-brain barrier into the brain and then you can use it not only for energy but also it's used to make cholesterol
