we consume about 10 to 20 milligrams of iron per day and our absorption of that is roughly 10% so we're going to absorb somewhere between 1 and 2 Mig of iron per day the rest of it will be lost right it's going to come right out our GI system we're also going to lose 1 to 2 milligrams of iron per day um primarily through desquamation of epithelial cells so if you do the math on that you're an iron balance if you're absorbing 1 to2 milligram net per day relative to the 1 to 2 milligrams that you're losing per day
