but i think when we say doesn't function as well we tend to think of as it's functioning at a lower level right there's just less activation which actually isn't necessarily the case in old mice in old people there's a lot of immune activation that shouldn't be happening right there's a lot of sterile inflammation that's occurring so it's not necessarily that the immune system is is functioning less it's functioning inappropriately

Low-level chronic inflammation or sterile inflammation is similar to acute inflammation and that many of the players are the same but of course, it's at a much lower level. If it were that fulminant, you would probably die very quickly because your tissues would fall apart. But nonetheless, with aging, there's this constant increase in these innate immune cells that infiltrate your tissue. And after a while, the tissue does begin to degrade and lose its structure and loose its function.

And it really refers to the fact that well, if a pathologist were to take a liver sample say from a 15 year old and a 50 year old, he or she could probably instantaneously tell you who was young and who was old. One would be just looking at the structure of the tissue but the other is he or she would look for what we call a low-level sterile chronic inflammation, meaning low-level infiltration of some immune cells but no evidence of the pathogen. And so this is a characteristic of almost all aging tissues is this low level inflammation.
I think there has been now enough evidence that inflammation, chronic, low-level inflammation is a driver of the aging process itself. In other words, not just driving, increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease and dementia and cancer, which it does, but just the process of aging.
