that damaged mitochondrial respiration results in in a decrease in the cell's ability to maintain its bioenergetic potential right so ATP levels fall and through a retrograde response the nucleus senses the level of energy and talks to the mitochondria and senses an energetic crisis and that fall in ATP not only impairs DNA repair mechanisms but the nucleus senses the Fallen ATP and also activates a number of genes some of them being oncogenes
