until then unfortunately we have to do tests on humans or mice or dogs or monkeys and unfortunately we can only learn one thing at a time that way we do controlled experiments where we hold everything constant except one variable and in so doing we try to understand how that variable works and this is a very slow way of learning and it's a very expensive way of learning and although the people who participate in clinical trials are heroes to whom we owe most of our medicine clinical trials are a brutal form of learning that cause many people to die from experimental medicines or that cause many people to endure enormous suffering without any benefit.
