A rural Kenyan hospital saw 50-60 patients per day with tropical illnesses like malaria, TB, and leishmaniasis, compared to 5-6 patients per day in a US residency.

“I think what struck me was just the volume of patience I mean I was a resident and you know in clinic days we'd see like five or six patients you know and get all every little detail down in each one and now I'm in this rural Hospital in Kenya and I mean you're seeing 50 60 patients you know huge numbers the clinic the the wards are full go do a ward round I was in charge of the adult Ward and there were you know at the time I thought it was a huge may like 30 40 patients there and I was responsible for all them just the sheer volume of patients you had to go through every day in the variety of diseases so not only the tropical stuff which I I didn't know much about I mean here's malaria TB leishmaniasis all this kind of stuff I had no idea about I had to learn about when I was there”
