so if you look at figure one it's a Kaplan Meyer curve which is a mortality curve so you'll see these in all sorts of studies so when the x-axis is always time and on the y-axis is always the cumulative survival so it's a curve that always goes from zero to one one or one hundred percent and it's always decreasing monotonically meaning it can only go down or stay flat it can never go back up
