Lactate as a signaling molecule
People have thought that lactate is a dead-end metabolite, that it's a poison. But, why is it always there? Why is the fire department always there at a fire? Is lactate the cause of the problem or is it there to mitigate the problem, just like the fire department?
Turns out Dr. George Brooks out of UC Berkeley decades ago came up with this lactate shuttle theory. It's no longer a theory. It's been proven many, many, many times. Um, lactate is not only an energetic molecule. So, it gets shuttled back into cells including the muscle and is used to make energy like glucose, like fatty acids. In fact, it's more energetically favorable than glucose.
