I would choose sardines packed in salt water, not in any sort of oil. Salt water is going to leech less of the BPA from the lining of the sardines can into the sardines. And if you can find sardines packed in glass, that's going to be even better because there's no BPA in glass.
So, in summary, if you want to eat sardines, check the expiration date, get them in glass, get them packed in salt water, and check your arsenic levels.
