Catheter-based interventions can retrieve and dissolve clots causing acute severe strokes, significantly improving outcomes compared to older methods of only administering medication.

“a huge change actually now has been able to um now being able to retrieve and uh dissolve clots that are you know causing acute severe strokes. So um those are probably the most dramatic things that we've seen someone come in uh not able to talk uh paralyzed on half side of the body. Um in the old days we would just give some medications keeping our fingers crossed that that would work. it rarely worked. It was really the minority of cases that it helped. But nowadays, there's a much bigger fraction of patients where you can put the device in, retrieve uh the stroke.”
