the notion that if you have this huge signal coming from the olfactory system and it, to some degree is lateralized, is not perfectly symmetrical. That is one side is not going evenly to both sides, then you can imagine that once the signal gets distributed in a way that's not uniform, that the effectiveness or the response is going to be particular to the cortex in which either the signal still remains or the signal is removed from.
