A cold shower will save you money on your heating bill.
The evidence is convergent. Multiple independent sources reach the same conclusion, the underlying mechanism is well-characterized, and even the field's most cautious voices treat it as worth doing.
A cold shower will save you money on your heating bill.

Bookmarking — the dossier-vs-overview split is the right call. Most of the time I want overview; sometimes I want receipts.

thereby elevated mood, alertness & focus.
But it’s a useful tool that takes three minutes or less and has outsized positive benefits relative to the time investment or cost.
Seems obvious that regular cold exposure by shower, ice bath or circulating cold water bath is good for one’s mental & physical health.
Indeed, things like cold showers, ice baths, super oxygenation, Wim Hof type breathing, will bring your level of alertness up.
Pick a practice that you can do fairly consistently, maybe every day, but maybe every third day or every fourth day, maybe it's an ice bath or a cold bath. Maybe it's a cold shower. Maybe it's the cyclic inhale exhale, breathing protocol I described, if that wasn't clear and people always ask for a demo, I'm not going to do the whole thing right now, but I'm willing to do a few rounds of this, or a few cycles I should say.
So my recommendation would be for most people only do deliberate cold exposure if you are prepared to be fairly alert for the next one to four or maybe had been six hours following that deliberate cold exposure.
the key point is that your mental state is shifted when you are exposed to certain forms of cold, and many people use deliberate cold exposure specifically to shift their body state as a way to train your mental state so that they can better cope with stress in real life
Deliberate cold exposure is a terrific way to increase your core metabolism and oftentimes critics will say, well, the increase in metabolism isn't that significant although I do want to point out again, the 93% and 350% increases in metabolism from that previous study. But critics then will say, well, that doesn't really translate to that big of a caloric burn during the deliberate cold exposure. But to that, you should say, ah, but that's only limiting your optics to just a portion of the effects of deliberate cold exposure because deliberate cold exposure can also convert white fat to beige fat and brown fat and lead to these more lasting increases in metabolism. So for any of you interested in increasing your metabolism and or being comfortable in cold environments and or being comfortable in terms of being able to combat stress mentally, deliberate cold exposure, I do believe is a powerful tool.
I do, I do. - Just take a moment and, and just tell us, what is your cold exposure protocol, then I'll take you back to what you're saying. - So my cold exposure protocol is at the end of every morning shower that I take, the shower is warm, but I give myself a big blast of cold at the end of that and it makes me feel so good.
And I think everything points to the fact that it's healthy and good
deliberate cold exposure isn't the only way but frankly it's the most reliable way and it's the most versatile way to do that because you can do it in your shower or in a cold Plunge at home
a lot of people who do deliberate cold exposure say that they don't require as much caffeine in order to maintain their alertness and energy which shouldn't be surprising to us at all right I mean it's increasing cacola means we know this
Deliberate cold exposure, I think, is a wonderful tool for increasing alertness, not just while you're in there, but when you get out.
We know that deliberate cold exposure is very, very low cost or even cost saving if you use a cold shower because you're saving on the heating bill. We know that if you can afford a cold plunge or access a safe river, or stream, or cold plunge, great. What do we know it does? It changes your state. It shifts your state. It makes you more alert, not just while you're in there, but in the minutes and certainly up to an hour or more afterwards.
so in the six hours after you're trying to get your you know a little more Peak on your biceps or something it's going to block that but most people have not experienced control over their physiology at the level that comes from doing consistent cold punching in the early part of the day warming up and becoming more parasympathetic uh later in the day it's like they start to feel a level of control over their mood and energy that's that's so striking with basically zero cost tools
here's a protocol that anyone can use if you want to increase levels of energy if you suffer from low energy during the daytime or whenever it is you'd like to be alert pick a practice that you can do fairly consistently maybe every day but maybe every third day or every fourth day maybe it's an ice bath or a cold bath maybe it's a cold shower maybe it's the cyclic in inhale exhale breathing protocol I described
what's interesting about deliberate cold exposure through you know cold plunge or what have you is that people generally report feeling very good almost like a mild Euphoria for many hours afterwards elevated Focus many hours afterwards
And then deliberate cold exposure. Um, hard to do if you don't have your own cold plunge. Although depending on where you live in the US in the in the winter, cold showers can do wonders as well.
