Cortisol as I mentioned is released from the adrenals and it can bind to receptors. It can have action, both in the body and in the brain. In fact, it can bind to the so-called threat detection center in the brain, or one of them which is the amygdala, also called the fear center. It can do that because cortisol can cross the blood brain barrier.
