the norm when scientists track athletes on route to becoming elite is that early on they tend to have what they call a sampling period where they try a wide variety of activities that often cludes things like martial arts and dance and doesn't just have to be other sports gymnastics and they learn these broad general these physical skills and they learn about their interests and their abilities importantly and delay specializing until later than peers who plateau at lower level and that turns out to be the norm
at certain ages like in the early and mid teen years it was those who did a wider variety of activities and so then I started to think maybe there really is something to the skill benefit

sampling is the key and specialist specialization if we can think of the worst possible thing you can do for your kid it is to let them specialize even if it gets to the point where they think dad I don't like you you're mean you're you're not a good person because you're not letting me do what I want to do.
