Dean Lloyd Minor discovered superior semicircular canal dehiscence by listening to a patient's report of eye movements and blurred vision in response to loud sounds, leading to the identification of the vestibulo-ocular reflex.

“But what Lloyd heard, and paid attention to, is that the patient said, "When I hear a loud sound, I feel that my eyes are moving and my vision becomes blurry." And so Lloyd thought, "Really? So, let me put loud sound in your ear," which he did, and he noticed that the patient's eyes started moving in the vertical direction. So, there is this vestibulo-ocular reflex, and he figured, well, then the superior semicircular canal must be involved”
