It gets digested elsewhere along your digestive track too, of course but it starts getting digested there because along this tube, you have a series of what are called sphincters, which basically are like little draw pulls. Have you ever had a laundry bag, which has a drawstring on it? You pull it and then it cinches shut, and then you can open it again, that's what those are.
