your skin is a living organ in and of itself... the skin cells themselves are made in the deeper layers of the skin and they migrate out towards the surface of the skin and at the surface of the skin on top of those cells and made by those cells are different types of chemicals that actually serve as antibacterial and antiviral agents meaning if a cold virus or flu virus or other type of virus lands on the skin it can neutralize and kill that virus
