for example in the the Freudian concept of the ego it's it's much more the whole self it's the part of self that one can bring in a conscious way to bear on the questions and issues at hand it's that it's the part of self that can mediate between the different poles right so that it may be about gratification the super-ego may be about what you should or shouldn't do but ideally it's the ego the whole self that pulls that together and that's a very different use of the term ego then how it often is used these days where ego is a sense of self that essentially indicates a defense mechanism
