but it's very clear that there are other substrates for example from protein fermentation we can get isobutyrate so that can also basically signal you have fulfilled the same signaling functions is butyrate and also can be used um in the epithelial cell for energy so that's coming from protein and then there's also evidence that um circulating ketones can also enter epithelial cells from the basolateral side
and so in the absence of fiber from the diet you could use circulating ketones to essentially fuel the clonic epithelial cells
mct-1 is expressed on the basal lateral membrane of enterocytes so they can take up ketones from circulation and actually that the common pathway with butyrate is acetoacetyl coa before it goes into the mitochondria so we think that ketones can be used to to fuel enterocytes
