my thinking here is what i tell my patients is whatever works to everyone is so different different likes different dislikes i say look at the scale whatever works for you to lose weight because i know if you lose the weight your diabetes is going to get better so i say you find something whatever works for you stick with it that's the challenge because we're very successful in the short term getting patients to lose weight the unfortunate part is they're able to get the weight off and then three months later six months later they come back to the office and they're right back where they started so it's a matter of i tell them you have to find something that works for you get the weight off but then you have to be able to stick to it and that's where the challenge a lot of diets people are able to get on and get the weight off and they just can't adhere to it for the long term and so it's a marathon you have to find something you like like it enough to be able to stick with that's the most important thing because we've all seen that where people lose the weight and then a few weeks months later right back to where they started so everyone has to find what works for them
the research shows that in terms of dietary adherence the less you can change the better they will do because it's already close to their current lifestyle
none of this matters if you can adhere to the perfect diet for 3 months and then you can't it's better to have a 7 out of 10 diet in terms of quality and Perfection that you can sustain indefinitely than a 10 out of 10 diet that you can only sustain for three or six
And the fifth and final point, and I can't overstate this, is whatever dietary choice you make, you have to think about it through the lens of long-term adherence and for you, the individual, some sort of social sustainability.
So get the thing you can adhere to the diet model that you can adhere to. Like a lot of people the the diet that on paper is the best won't be the one that you stick to for more than like 6 weeks. So like don't do that one if that's the case cuz you're not going to stick to it and you're just going to end up where you were before.
