Ketamine is used in emergency rooms to prevent the attachment of intense emotion to traumatic experiences by blocking plasticity shortly after the event.

“So ketamine is being stocked in a number of different emergency rooms, where if people are brought in quickly and, you know, these are hard to describe even but, you know, a horrible experience of somebody seeing a loved one next to them killed in a car accident and they were driving that car. This isn't for everybody, certainly and you need to talk to your physician, but ketamine is being used so they might infuse somebody with ketamine so that their emotion it can still occur, but that the plasticity, the change in the wiring of their brain won't allow that intense emotion to be attached to the experience.”
