there are a couple of common polymorphisms in the cyp2 R1 Gene which encodes for the Vitamin D 25 hydroxylase the enzyme that is responsible for converting vitamin D3 into 25 hydroxy vitamin D which is the major circulating form of vitamin D which goes on to be converted into the active steroid hormone people with these specific polymorphisms have a lower circulating 25 hydroxy vitamin D level and also have reduced enzimatic activity of the 25 hydroxylase this has been associated with a higher all cause mortality
