now again it's a new era we can check for amyloid in the brain we can look for amyloid and tau in the spinal fluid you know even soon we'll be able to do tau scans tau protein is another like amyloid pathologic protein that gets built up and then brain of a person with Alzheimer's and and you can look at these biomarkers to make a definitive diagnosis does this person have Alzheimer's the only main reason to do that is if we're gonna think about a clinical trial

you know certainly it is extremely helpful in the diagnostic process to have you know formal tests like csf or amyloid pet in terms of confirming a diagnosis you know although we certainly don't do brain biopsies unlike when i graduated when you literally could only see amyloid at autopsy under a microscope we now do have the ability to image amyloid in living patients which has you know and i know we're going to talk about research later allowed us to really go much earlier in the process and and design some prevention trials based on targeting people who have brain amyloid but don't yet have memory symptoms

um you know the correlation i i believe in one of the studies with um amivid uh floor beta pier which was one of the first amyloid imaging uh ligands that came out the correlation between the pet and their these were people who were kind enough to donate their brains after they passed to compare to what their pet scan looked like and it was a correlation about 97
but the bottom line is this diagnosis really isn't definitively made um or at least if we want to conclude it until an autopsy now today there are other biomarkers that are increasing in um the sensitivity for this so we we now have the ability to look at serum amyloid and Tau and those can be coupled with the things I've described above in addition to things like amyloid pet such that a really good diagnostician can probably be almost assured that a patient indeed has Alzheimer's disease based on the presentation
