Neuroplasticity (neural circuit rewiring) is a 2 phase process: it is initiated by alert, focused (even agitated) states, but consolidated during deep & REM sleep & non-sleep-deep-rest (NSDR).

Plasticity is a process facilitated by focused attention followed by sleep.
What governs the transition between alert and focused and these deep rest and deep sleep states is a system in our brain and body, a certain aspect of the nervous system called the autonomic nervous system.
Neuroplasticity as I've talked about in the podcast before is a two step process. It involves focusing very intensely or at least focusing somewhat on whatever it is that one is trying to learn, and then engaging in deep rest, ideally deep sleep in the following nights. And I've also talked about the benefits of things like naps and Yoga Nidra so-called NSDR, Non Sleep Deep Rest for enhancing or accelerating plasticity.
