This was originally called the basic rest-activity cycle. This was proposed many years ago by Nathaniel Kleitman. It was established to be true within sleep states as I mentioned before. Then it was debated for a long time whether or not these 90-minute cycles also control our ability to focus and perform work in wakeful states and it turns out that they do.
