Plant defense chemicals are hard to ignore.
The evidence is convergent. Multiple independent sources reach the same conclusion, the underlying mechanism is well-characterized, and even the field's most cautious voices treat it as worth doing.
Plant defense chemicals are hard to ignore.
Every Sunday: the week’s new conflicts and verdict changes — and nothing else.
Native comments, Twitter mentions, and Reddit threads about this claim — surfaced together so the conversation isn't fragmented across platforms.
Bookmarking — the dossier-vs-overview split is the right call. Most of the time I want overview; sometimes I want receipts.
Would love a "what would change this verdict" RSS feed. Sign me up if it exists.
With regard to plants, we must remember that they are rooted in the ground and have developed chemical defenses (and physicial defenses) out of necessity. We cannot ignore the vast array of these toxins or discount their potentially negative effects on humans.
there's a lot of defense chemicals in those plants
plants put defense chemicals in leaves like kale or spinach they put defense chemicals in roots and stems and bark even cinnamon a mainstream spice has things like coumarins in it which can be problematic for humans
plant leaves plant stems plant roots plant seeds they don't want to get eaten they're going to have defense chemicals let's be cautious and careful and understand if if they're harming us or at least ask the question
so the leaves of plants are not something that plants want us to eat and they contain defense chemicals
and their main defense and deterrent is chemical protection and defense and people are just not respecting plants as much as they should they are they are they are absolutely more than capable of Defending themselves or else they would be extinct and so us just thinking like oh yeah you can just eat any any old plant you want they're all good for you I think you're really taking uh a very serious risk with your health and um and I think a lot of people are suffering for that
plants have are living organisms and they are able to protect themselves just like every other living organism and their main defense and deterrent is chemical protection and defense and people are just not respecting plants as much as they should they are they are they are absolutely more than capable of Defending themselves or else they would be extinct and so us just thinking like oh yeah you can just eat any any old plant you want they're all good for you I think you're really taking a very serious risk with your health
and just learning you know the different ways that that uh you know that plants could defend themselves by using specific defense chemicals and obviously you know as you and your audience well know this is this is why you can't just eat any random plant when you get out lost in the woods most plants are in edible most plants will cause extreme illness or even death on consumption of even small amount of them
