The ventromedial hypothalamus is a nucleus, meaning a small collection of neurons... Nerve cells, and that small collection of neurons that we call the ventromedial hypothalamus is truly small. It's only about 1,500 neurons on one side of your brain and a matching 1,500 neurons on the other side of your brain and that combined 3000 neurons or so, it's not exactly 3000, but 3000 neurons or so is sufficient to generate aggressive behavior of the sort that Hess observed in the cat.
